Hipp Unplugged: A Stage Reading Series

Our Staged Reading Series endeavors to bring Gainesville challenging theater that amplifies the voices of underserved playwrights, fostering growth within our company and artistic community. For Hipp Pride, our artistic team has curated two plays, one of which will be a world premiere!

DIKE – After two years of separation, a pair of sisters from an ecclesiastical family reunite to navigate the murky waters of identity. The young women united by this reunion struggle for clarity in their most significant relationships; those with God, those with lovers, those with family. A wrenching exploration of love, sexuality, and sisterhood, Dike questions the walls religion and social conditioning build in us. “The Devil is not involved in matters of the heart.”

Basement Sessions serves as a dynamic platform for Gainesville artists to converge, expand their audiences, experiment with new sounds, and explore various art forms. In celebration of Hipp Pride, we’ll welcome local LGBTQ+ artists, including musicians, crafters, and visual artists, to showcase and sell their work.
Story Time with a Mermaid
Saturday, June 15, 2024 – 11am start time!
Mermaids will enchant our young audience with captivating tales. Kids and teens are invited to join us for an enchanting story time experience with a mystical mermaid.
Hipp Cinema: Pride Movies
Friday through Sunday, June 14-16,2024
As Gainesville’s premier art-house cinema, the Hipp Cinema will present a curated selection of LGBTQ+ movies and documentaries throughout the festival.
Rafiki

Kena and Ziki live very different lives in Nairobi. Kena works in her father’s shop and awaits the start of nursing school, while Ziki passes the days hanging out with her friends and making up dance routines. Their paths cross when their fathers run against each other for seats in the County Assembly, and they find themselves drawn to each other. Soon their interest grows to affection and the girls find ways to love each other despite the ever-watching gaze of the neighborhood. (83 minutes)
