
Costume First Hand

The Hippodrome Theatre is looking to hire a Costume First Hand. The First Hand works as part of the costume shop team and assists with costume build, including draping/flat patterning, cutting and stitching.
This is a full-time, hourly position. Health insurance contribution, vacation and sick leave. Retirement contribution. $15 per hour non-exempt.

Essential Position Functions:
- Work directly with costume designer and costume shop supervisor to assist with costume build, including draping/flat patterning, cutting and stitching
- Prep for and assist costume designer with fittings, including note taking
- Assist in delegating stitching work to the costume shop intern
- Assist with maintaining costume stock, including pulling and restocking garments
Requirements:
- Experience with draping and flat patterning, and working with draped and commercial patterns
- Knowledge of theatrical cutting and construction techniques
- Intermediate to advanced stitching ability
- Experience with domestic and industrial sewing machines
- Undergraduate degree in theatre or equivalent experience
- Excellent organizational and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prioritize projects and manage time effectively
- Flexibility to work evenings and weekends during tech process
- Knowledge of standard workflow through costume shop and standard tech schedule
- A valid driver’s license and personal vehicle
Preferred abilities:
- Experience with wig styling, maintenance and application
- Experience with costume crafts, such as dyeing and distressing
- Experience with tailoring techniques
