The Hippodrome Theatre proudly presents Sherrie Pettigrew’s Artwork
Featured for Art Walk Feb. 23, 7 to 10 p.m.
GAINESVILLE – Sherrie Pettigrew’s art exhibit will be featured in the Hippodrome Art Gallery for the next Artwalk Gainesville on Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, from 7 – 10 p.m., and open for the first preview of “Ripcord” at the Hippodrome Theatre the following week.
Pettigrew is a Florida artist who composes her drawings based on the people and objects around her in everyday life. Graphite powder and pencil are her primary materials, and she sometimes incorporates paint, pastel chalk and found objects.
“These images come to me in the shower, theater, market, and street complete with smells, sounds, and visions seldom shared until they are actualized,” Pettigrew said.
Pettigrew admires artists Chuck Close, Joan Miro and Cy Twombly, and they inspire her artistic style. She describes her collection as an evolution from hyperrealism to psychological surrealism.
“I come from honesty in my approach, making work that isn’t always pretty,” Pettigrew said. “These pieces are about emotion, often without cognitive consideration: recording reality with a twist and my own hypersensitive view.”
We hope to see you there!

Returning to New York after an extended stint in London, artistically unfulfilled writer Diana (Mamet) moves into the perfect apartment while earning her keep by working at a bridal shop. Advising her are her free-spirited widowed landlady Amy, and kooky best friend Gabby. Diana thinks she has made a new start, until realizing her downstairs neighbor is her teddy bear-like old flame, the vulnerable and aggrieved Ben (Matthew Shear), whose heart she broke. Like a true New Yorker, she keeps the apartment, despite the awkward arrangement. As the estranged couple attempts to navigate cordial not-so-cohabitation and their knotty feelings, first-time writer-director Sophie Brooks flashes back to the early bloom of their courtship, the question of what went wrong hanging over every scene. This quirky and easygoing millennial love story features a stellar cast, led by Mamet and Shear, and supported by indie stalwart Deirdre O’Connell, as well as newcomers Sarah Ramos and Diana Irvine.
A fresh take on an oft-told girl-meets-boy story, THE BOY DOWNSTAIRS offers a touching and lightly comic contemplation of modern relationships, life choices and the price of independence and freedom.
