From the Inside: art by Incarcerated Women @ Hippodrome Theatre
Feb 8 @ 12:00 pm – 9:30 pm

The Hippodrome Theatre Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition of illustrations and collage created by women incarcerated at the Florida Women’s Reception Center (FWRC) in Lowell, Fla.

“From the Inside” will run from Jan. 5 – Feb. 10, 2019 with a special reception on Jan. 25 from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m at Artwalk.

Since 2013 volunteers of the Journey Daybook organization have taught the process of making illustrated journals to small groups of incarcerated women at the Florida Women’s Reception Center (FWRC) in Lowell, Fla. Journey Daybook pages capture a moment in time, a sight, a sound, a sense, a tiny piece of one person’s perception.

Thirteen gallery artists will be featured in the show: Rozzi Kunz, Jackie Kennedy, Ashley Dizdar, Betty Kirk, Deborah Rice, Latesha Brokenshire. Lori Steele, Heather Bruen, Jamie Davis, Lisa Wisor Serratore, Brandi Murch, Jennifer Graves and Celeste Frotten. Many of the works center around the types of sights and sounds that these women have personally experienced in the justice system.

Visual works range from delicate watercolor landscapes, stream of consciousness poetry, graphic ink illustration and found object collage.

“From the Inside” will run through Feb. 10, 2019. The volunteer staff of the Journey Daybook organization will be present at the Gainesville Artwalk reception on Jan. 25 from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Sunday noon till “close of shows,” and by appointment.

Miracle on South Division Street: Observership @ Hippodrome Theatre
Feb 22 @ 12:45 pm – 3:45 pm

The behind-the-scenes glimpse of what it takes to create a Hippodrome Theatre mainstage production is back with the heartfelt comedy “Miracle on South Division Street” Mini Observership, beginning Friday, Feb. 8.

MEETING DATES:
– Friday, February 8 (12:45 – 3 p.m.) – Meet the cast and director, attend the first read-through, see design presentations.
– Friday, February 15 (3 – 5 p.m.) – Discuss the creative process with the designers and attend a rehearsal with the actors.
– Wednesday, February 27 (7 – 10 p.m.) – Preview performance and notes afterwards with the cast.

The Hippodrome’s Observership is a backstage pass to a world few audience members get to see. You will have the opportunity to join the cast and designers from the first rehearsal to the last. Question the actors about their craft. Learn how the designers create the world of the play. Become an active member of the Hippodrome creative family and join us to delve, dig, and discover how a show goes from the pages to the stage!

Our Spring Mini Observership will be “Miracle on South Division Street” by Tom Dudzick, who you may remember as the author of the Hipp hits “Over the Tavern” and “King of the Moon.” In this heartfelt and hilarious comedy, the Nowak’s family legend starts to unravel following a deathbed confession, and the family struggles through laughter to find their new identity.

Every family has its secrets. Most don’t build a shrine to them in front of their house. In “Miracle on South Division Street,” hilarity ensues as an age-old family myth crashes headlong into reality.

The NY Times says “Another winner… Give in to Miracle on South Division Street. You’ll be glad you did.”
