The Square
The winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s 2017 Palme D’Or!

The Stockholm Palace Gallery’s latest exhibition is about to open, and gallery curator Christian is excited to share his lofty new vision with the world. But when his mobile phone gets pickpocketed, Christian’s life is thrown into chaos, as he’s forced to reassess just how progressive he really is.

Elisabeth Moss, Dominic West, and PLANET OF THE APES / KONG: SKULL ISLAND motion capture performer Terry Notary join a talented pan-European cast to illustrate THE SQUARE’s sprawling narrative. Constantly twisting and changing, the film rarely lets up, and constantly surprises.

SHOWTIMES (week of 1/19):

1/19 (Friday): 7:45 p.m.
1/20 (Saturday): 5:30 p.m.
1/21 (Sunday): 11:15 p.m.
1/23 (Tuesday): 8:00 p.m.

THE SQUARE continues director Ruben Östlund’s (FORCE MAJEURE) detailed examination of fragile masculinity and dysfunctional human interaction. Skewering modern notions of public relations, relationships, class, entitlement, and art, it’s a smart and savage indictment of the veneer of civility we call society.

Scanners

With SCANNERS David Cronenberg plunges us into one of his most terrifying and thrilling sci-fi worlds. After a man with extraordinary—and frighteningly destructive—telepathic abilities is nabbed by agents from a mysterious rogue corporation, he discovers he is far from the only possessor of such strange powers, and that some of the other “scanners” have their minds set on world domination, while others are trying to stop them. A trademark Cronenberg combination of the visceral and the cerebral, this phenomenally gruesome and provocative film about the expanses and limits of the human mind was the Canadian director’s breakout hit in the United States.

From Academy Award®-winning director Hayao Miyazaki, “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind” is considered by many to be his masterwork — and there are few films, animated or otherwise, of such sweeping scope and grandeur. Set in a devastated future world decimated by atmospheric poisons and swarming with gigantic insects, Nausicaä is a young princess, both brave and innocent, whose love for all living things and passionate determination to understand the processes of nature lead her into terrible danger, sacrifice, and eventual triumph.

Yojimbo

Akira Kurosawa’s classic Yojimbo follows the story of a ronin (a samurai with no master, played by Toshiro Mifune) who wanders into a Japanese town in 1860 that is ravaged by an ongoing war between two gangs. He plays the gangs against one another for the good of the town, and becomes the town’s de facto protector. Set in 1860, Yojimbo is regarded as one of the best films of all time, with a central performance by an anonymous protagonist (‘the man with no name’), and was reworked three years later by Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood in A Fistful for Dollars. It is classic Western, relocated to Japan.
