Black Films Matter: Putney Swope
May 31 @ 7:30 pm

Putney Swope

Join us for the first installment of the Hippodrome’s Black Films Matter film series at the Hipp Cinema on the last Thursday of every month. The first screening will be “Putney Swope” at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 31.
When its chairman dies, an advertising firm’s executive board must elect someone to fill the position. Each member, unable to vote for himself, casts a secret ballot for Putney Swope (Arnold Johnson), the firm’s only black executive, assuming he wouldn’t receive any votes from the other members. But once in power, Swope makes radical changes to the firm — like keeping only one white employee and refusing to advertise harmful products — all under the firm’s new moniker, “Truth and Soul, Inc.”

How To Talk To Girls At Parties

From the raucous dual imaginations of fantasy laureate Neil Gaiman (“American Gods,”CORALINE) and glam-rock multi-hyphenate John Cameron Mitchell (HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, SHORTBUS) comes the electrifying and singular popextravaganza film, HOW TO TALK TO GIRLS AT PARTIES. Enn (Alex Sharp) is a shy suburban London teenager in 1977, sneaking out with his best friends to after-hours punk parties. One night they stumble upon a bizarre gathering of sexy teenagers who seem like they are from another planet. In fact, theyare from another planet, visiting Earth to complete a mysterious rite of passage. That doesn’t stop Enn from falling madly in love with Zan (Elle Fanning), a beautiful and rebellious alien teenager who, despite her allegiance to her strange colony, is fascinated by Enn. Together they embark on a delirious adventure through the kinetic punk rock world of 1970s London, inadvertently setting off a series of events that will lead to the ultimate showdown of punks vs. aliens, and test the limits of how far each of them will go for true love.

Did You Wonder Who Fired The Gun?

United States / 2017 / 90 minutes / NR
Director: Travis Wilkerson
Producer: Travis Wilkerson

“In 1946, my great-grandfather murdered a black man named Bill Spann and got away with it.” So begins Travis Wilkerson’s critically acclaimed documentary, Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun?, which takes us on a journey through the American South to uncover the truth behind a horrific incident and the societal mores that allowed it to happen. Acting as narrator and guide, Wilkerson spins a strange, frightening tale, incorporating scenes from To Kill a Mockingbird, the music of Janelle Monáe and Phil Ochs, and the story of Rosa Parks’ investigation into the Recy Taylor case, as well as his own family history, for a gripping investigation into our collective past and its echoes into the present day.

  • Critic’s Pick! “A scorching and rigorous essay… a passionately political film, aflame with rage…”— A.O. Scott, The New York Times
  • “An urgent, often corrosive look at America’s past and present through the prism of family, patriarchy, white supremacy and black resistance.”— Manohla Dargis, The New York Times
  • “An extraordinary first-person documentary.”— Richard Brody, The New Yorker
  • “It’s hard to experience Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun? and not get shivers up your spine.”— BIlge Ebiri, The Village Voice
  • “One of the strongest works at a chilling Sundance Film Festival. Wilkerson doesn’t offer an answer. But raising the question — at this moment when families are torn apart by what they believe America is and should be — is more than enough.”— Amy Taubin, Artforum
  • “Travis Wilkerson comes from the school of cinematic self-inquiry. His latest, Did You Wonder Who Fired the Gun?, the unequivocal highlight of this year’s True/False, takes this approach further – and to greater heights – than ever bef
