Changeville Presents: The Florida Project

ONE SHOWTIME

FEBRUARY 9th

Academy Award Nominee for Best Supporting Actor

Changeville is partnering with The Frank Conference and for a one day only  screening of The Florida Project. This is preceded by the short film “The Global Connection”.

Warm, winning, and gloriously alive, Sean Baker’s The Florida Project is a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood.

Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, The Florida Project follows six-year-old Moonee (Brooklynn Prince in a stunning breakout turn) and her rebellious mother Halley (Bria Vinaite, another major discovery) over the course of a single summer. The two live week to week at “The Magic Castle,” a budget motel managed by Bobby (a career-best Willem Dafoe), whose stern exterior hides a deep reservoir of kindness and compassion.

Fantastic Planet

Join your favorite blue aliens for a screening of 1973 cult French classic, Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage), the hypnotic sci-fi masterpiece by director René Laloux and illustrator Roland Topor. Based on the French sci-fi novel Oms en série by Stefan Wul, Fantastic Planet follows a revolutionary clash on the alien planet Ygam, where enslaved humans – Oms – are treated as pets by their giant native blue masters – Draags – in their meditation-based utopia. Developed at the Jirí Trnka Studios in the old Czech Republic, Fantastic Planet is a landmark of hallucinatory animation, thanks to Topor’s surreal, eerie creature and background designs, and an amazing, psychedelic soundtrack by French jazz pianist Alain Goraguer (sideman of Boris Vian and Serge Gainsbourg).

Yojimbo

Akira Kurosawa’s classic Yojimbo follows the story of a ronin (a samurai with no master, played by Toshiro Mifune) who wanders into a Japanese town in 1860 that is ravaged by an ongoing war between two gangs. He plays the gangs against one another for the good of the town, and becomes the town’s de facto protector. Set in 1860, Yojimbo is regarded as one of the best films of all time, with a central performance by an anonymous protagonist (‘the man with no name’), and was reworked three years later by Sergio Leone and Clint Eastwood in A Fistful for Dollars. It is classic Western, relocated to Japan.
