The Hippodrome Theatre offers the following Volunteer Opportunities:

Individual Ushering (Mainstage)

Occurrence/Commitment: 6 or 7 times a year; set dates, scheduled ahead of time.
Time Frame: Evenings/Weekends; occasional workday matinees
Description: Ushers for our Mainstage productions assist the House Manager by taking tickets, handing out programs, showing patrons to their seats and operating our historic elevator. In exchange for your Volunteer Hours, you are entitled to attend that performance (or a later date in the event of a sell out) for free. Individual Ushers are used on an As-Needed Basis. Generally, there are at least two performances of every show that we will keep open for individual ushers. Volunteers who would like to be individual ushers will be notified of the open dates for ushering about a week before the run of each show starts. Volunteers interested in Ushering will be required to have attended an Usher Orientation before they will be permitted to perform all ushering duties. Please see below for the schedule of Usher Orientations.

Usher Captain (Mainstage)

Occurrence/Commitment: 7 or 8 times a year; set dates, scheduled ahead of time.
Time Frame: Evenings/Weekends
Description: Have a group of people you'd like to Usher with? If you can commit to bringing a group of 4-6 people to every show in the season, you would make a perfect Usher Captain. Ushers for our Mainstage productions assist the House Manager by taking tickets, handing out programs, showing patrons to their seats and operating our historic elevator. In exchange for your Volunteer Hours, you are entitled to attend that performance (or a later date in the event of a sell out) for free. Volunteers who would like to be Usher Captains will be assigned, in advance, a date for ushering every show in the regular season and will get priority choice of Christmas Show assignments. Availability is limited. Volunteers interested in Ushering will be required to have attended an Usher Orientation before they will be permitted to perform all ushering duties. Please see below for the schedule of Usher Orientations.

Gallery Attendant

Occurrence/Commitment: Once a week, three hour shifts; scheduled as needed
Time Frame: Evenings/Weekends
Duties: Gallery Attendants are needed to be present during secured exhibits to ensure that the artwork remains untouched.

Test Prep (Education)

Hospitality Committee

Occurrence/Commitment: Up to 7 times a year; scheduled in advance
Time Frame: Any
Description: Help our out of town actors feel like Gainesville is their home away from home. Make and/or provide Welcome Gift Baskets for actor housing at the beginning of every rehearsal period. You will be provided with a list of suggested items for Gift Baskets and may expand upon that as you wish. This is a Volunteer Category we are testing out and pending response, may be expanded in future seasons.

Auxiliary Flyering

Occurrence/Commitment: 7 times a year; week after each show closes. Scheduled in advance; others as needed.
Time Frame: Workdays (preferred), Weekends, Evenings
Duties: Auxiliary Flyering Volunteers are assigned a list of places and given a stack of posters to place at local businesses. They have one week to complete the Postering and must return the list and extra posters when they are done. We will sometimes need extra volunteers to help distribute our cinema newsletters or other program marketing materials, as well.
Notes: This Volunteer category would be a perfect opportunity for volunteers such as high school or college students needing community service hours for school groups or fraternities/sororities. At this time, we are limiting availability for this opportunity to only those groups.

Special Projects

Occurrence/Commitment: As needed
Time Frame: Workdays (preferred); flexible
Duties: From time to time we will have special projects available that might utilize your unique skills. Are you amazing at organization? We have some archives that could use your magic touch. Have an eye for graphic design? There's always something that needs designing around here. Let us know what skills and specialties you have and we'll let you know if we have something for you to do.
