Shakespeare seems to have known the world by intuition, to have looked through human nature at one glance – Alexander Pope
Romeo and Juliet is perhaps the most loved romantic tragedy. Since its beginnings in the late 1500s, it has grabbed the attention of audiences worldwide, leading to a plethora of creative treatments. It has appeared in a variety of stage and film adaptations as well as an opera, a musical and a ballet. You may have sung along with the Sharks and the Jets in West Side Story, the 1956 musical adaptation or been caught up in the onscreen and offscreen romance of the young stars of Franco Zefferelli’s beautiful 1968 film. Unless you were away from any media in 1996, you will certainly remember Baz Luhrman’s unique vision which put Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes in the spotlight. And if you are an “Oscar” aficionado, you were witness to the 7-award sweep of Shakespeare in Love, the 1998 blockbuster that rekindled the romance between audiences and Shakespeare.
Whatever your cultural experience has been, Shakespeare’s famous tale of star-crossed lovers has been a part of it and a significant part of cultural throughout the world. Let’s face it, Shakespeare, whoever he was, knew how to write stories rich with universal appeal! For that reason, his penmanship left a wonderful gift to artists: the chance to apply their own vision to his work without sacrificing the beautifully crafted plotlines.
Join the Hippodrome in the celebration of Romeo and Juliet. The production has already attracted enthusiastic responses from the Alachua County School Board, the Atrium, UF, Santa Fe Community College and the Gainesville community-at-large, making it a wonderful tool for intergenerational connection. Use it! Let it challenge you to help break the “ancient grudges” that have been passed down through the generations. Let it take you on a journey you’ve never traveled before. Let it move you. Let it entertain you.
Under the conceptually-driven direction of Hippodrome Artistic Director Lauren Caldwell, Romeo and Juliet brings an amazing palette of talent to the canvas we call a stage. Caldwell has assembled a stellar cast that includes Hippodrome favorites, sprinkled with some standout newcomers. Mihai Ciupe, whose set designs made their own standout performances in the past (Batboy, The Blue Room, Macbeth) returns to dazzle us with yet another fantastical design. Hippodrome Artists-in-Residence Marilyn Wall, Robert P. Robins and Lorelei Esser will also offer you some of the best examples of their creative vision.
Don’t miss Romeo and Juliet! Your senses will
thank you. February 28-March 23 (previews February 26 and 27).

Parting is such sweet sorrow ‘Tis not so hard, I think, for men so old as we to keep the peace A plague o’ both your houses Love give me strength, and strength shall help afford! It is the east, and Juliet is the sun For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo |

Marilyn’s White
House Experience
On December 3rd and 4th 2002, I had the privilege
of being the wardrobe, hair, and makeup artist for The White House Christmas
Special produced by White House Gardens Television filmed in the White
House. It was a snowy, freezing, clear day...a winter wonderland.
I was up at 4am and at my actresses’ hotel door awake, alert, with all
of my supplies chosen and organized by 5am. We had previously been
investigated, and on December 3rd we were searched at the White House
gate, given our badges, and asked to wait in the press room for Laura Bush’s
assistant who accompanied at all times. The White House had eighty
people hustling and bustling with wreathes, lights, garlands, and six 50
foot tall Christmas trees. Laura’s theme honored all the Presidents
pets over the years. All were reproduced in beautifully painted paper mache.
There was an alligator, three sheep, and the nativity scene that looked
like it could have been in the Sistine Chapel. The workers were kind,
polite, and amazingly self directed. They were always busy, working around
the clock until every detail was finished and all the floors were polished
and gleaming.
My favorite experience was meeting the White House head Chef and watching him put the finishing touches on the 6x4 foot gingerbread White House, and a 400 pound chocolate eagle. He finally offered our five person crew, in his wonderful French accent, cookies and pastries they must serve in heaven. The world seemed perfect and it was the Christmas we all dream of in our hearts.
We filmed by the Oval Office on the second day. Several Generals, their chests filled with metals, smiled, paused, and continued to rush into the President’s office, only twenty feet away, to talk of war. I turned away to look at the beautiful gently glittering hallway, full of holiday garlands, richly laden with history that, at the moment, seemed to belong to all Americans. For all of us, I made a special wish…”let there be peace on earth.”

ONE CITY ONE
STORY IS BACK
onecityonestory.html
With the help of an amazing advisory board, community
support and booklovers, One City One Story is back, full force! Last year’s
successful trial launch of the literature project which asked, “What if
an entire community read the same book at the same time?” inspired us to
do it again. Here’s a sneak peak at some of the scheduled events surrounding
the citywide reading of Romeo and Juliet:
The month of February: get a copy of Romeo and
Juliet at your favorite local bookstore or library. Read it alone, with
friends, or in a bookclub.
All events are free and open to the public unless
otherwise listed
