Michael
has landed ... in the biggest mess of his life, that is. Michael
is a frustrated intellectual working at K-Mart in a small town, trying
to convince his ex-wife that he’s not crazy for liking Beethoven and Tolstoy. The
sheriff has an arrest warrant on him, his ex-wife has married
a man with a sobriety deficiency, and nobody believes his story: that his
12-year-old son Billy was beamed up by aliens. The only proof
is the elusive visitor left behind --the one with the green complexion
and an affinity for beer and karaoke.
The little green man who drops into Michael’s life and his small town is like a gift from heaven. He brings hope, understanding, a compassionate ear and a lot of humor along with his taste for beer. Playwright Stuart Spencer spins his intergalactic tale in a Wisconsin town that resembles the small town he grew up in. “The main character Michael is someone I never became, but might have if I’d stayed. He and the alien are two sides of myself, each looking for connection and meaningful relationships in a place that feels like home,” said Spencer. Resident Alien is a deceptively simple story about love, literature, life, interspecies relationships and beer, whether here or among the stars. It’s a captivating tale--and funny to boot! |
