Catherine is the daughter of Robert, a brilliant mathematician at the University of Chicago. His genius is amplified through the amazing proofs he’s penned (“…the most elegant proofs, perfect proofs, proofs like music”). But like other geniuses with beautiful minds, Robert is plagued by a mental illness that forces him to live his last days at home. Upon his death, Catherine is faced with an empty house, a pile of notebooks full of Robert’s scribbles and Hal, a student eager to translate them. How does Catherine begin her new life without her father while a persistent young man keeps reminding her of his legacy? This is the point in which we enter the world of David Auburn’s comedic mystery-romance, PROOF.

Despite protests from Catherine (“It’s garbage…It’s gibberish…One hundred and three notebooks full of bullshit”), Hal remains eager to decipher the inner workings of Robert’s mind. The tension between these seemingly conflicted personalities is really heightened as a romance evolves and a mysterious proof appears, begging questions about its authorship. The plot thickens when Claire, Catherine’s assured sister, joins the others on a search for answers in an ever-growing equation.

Long before Ron Howard brought A Beautiful Mind to the silver screen, David Auburn crafted his play about genius, which awed audiences and critics alike. PROOF won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize, three Tony Awards including Best Play, Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, two Drama League Award including Best PLay, three Lucille Lortel Award including Best PLay, Kesserling Prize, New York Drama Critics Circle Award, the John Gassner Playwrighting Award, and two Outer Critic’s Circle Awards including Best Play.
