One Community One Story!

WUFT's Gallery Program

2 murders. 2 Southern cities. 2 popular American writers.
See what twists are in store with the One Community One Story Project
March 2008

What if all of the Gainesville area read the same book at the same time…again? This is the question behind the seventh annual community literary project, ONE COMMUNITY ONE STORY (formerly One City One Story). Due to popular demand, we've changed the name of this project from "City" to "Community" to include people and businesses outside the Gainesville city limits, making this a true community initiative.

This year's project explores southern literature and will focus on the best-selling book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt. At the heart of the project - as in years past - the Hippodrome Theatre will partner a stage play with the selected book. This year's stage play is another great southern work: Suddenly Last Summer by master American playwright Tennessee Williams. Through these selections, readers and theatre-goers will get a wonderful dose of southern gothic literature, eccentric characters, and mystery in two prominent southern settings: Savannah, Georgia and New Orleans, Louisiana. Throughout the month of March, take part in One Community One Story by reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and attending community events that surround its themes such as book talks, readings, mini-performances at local businesses, movies and panel discussions. And don't forget to check out the stage play Suddenly Last Summer at the Hippodrome, a professional regional theatre in downtown Gainesville. The play will run February 29-March 23.

The Hippodrome State Theatre is recognized by the State of Florida as a State Theatre/Cultural Institution. Hippodrome programs are sponsored in part by the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs, the Florida Arts Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts, the Alachua County Board of County Commission’s Cultural and Environmental Funding Program and Tourist Development Tax, and by the City of Gainesville, Dept. of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs.
