The Hippodrome’s production of A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings is an amalgamation of many things: the lives and experiences of Nilo Cruz and Gabriel García Márquez, the cultures of Cuba and Colombia, the Catholic faith, the traditions of the Yoruba people of West Africa, and so on and so forth.

In the design and approach to the text that we at the Hippodrome have taken, much of our own experiences and passions have informed this developing theatrical experience. Cruz’s stage adaptation, in many ways, mirrors the cultural, religious, political, and ethnic melting-pot that is the Caribbean.

As such, this Playgoers’ Guide is intended as a survey of these components that have homogenized to create this magical and exciting work of art. Please freely explore them by choosing one of the five options above. Let you curiosity guide you, and we hope to meet you soon in a town forgotten by time! Our guide is geared towards those of middle school age and older. For a guide geared for younger people, please see that developed by the Kirk Douglas Theatre
