About My Artworks

Mona Lisa

This is a painting by DaVinci, the “Mona Lisa”. As an artist, can you spot the details hidden in the picture? That serene expression? Those peaceful eyes? Also this is unfathomable, a fancy word meaning “hard to make out”, the half-smile? These are the things I used to make the pictures you see at the Hippodrome. The pictures I drew were from the play, “A Christmas Carol”.

Why did I pick this play to draw? When I was a wee lad, I saw the play. I was amazed at the special effects, the costumes, and just about everything. I was curious to experiment my own style of drawing for this play. The Ghost from the future caught my eyes… why? Well, I wanted to get the sense Gus himself that the ghost was merely a mist of misery, drama, and just about the mysterious veil that is hanging over the future. I loved the idea of a fog that’s closing in, and then the fog shapes itself into the ghost, which I did use in one of the pictures.

I… I don’t actually know how I started drawing. Someone put a sheet of paper and pencil in front of me, and I started drawing various profiles of people. It was glorious; I felt creative. Lately, I’m interested in the 50’s style of cartooning. I studied some cartoons, and I drew some scenes. I improved my drawing after capturing many details from what I see. This sounds Hallmark-y, right?

It was and honor for me to work at the Hippodrome. I had a great experience. I hope you will have a great time at the play!

With all due respect,
Gus Shitama
