"Penelope Cruz is a treat for the eyes, and so is her latest film, Pedro Almodovar’s sizzlingly sexy film noir Broken Embraces, a love letter to the magical power of movies to mend broken hearts." — New York Post

to this film

Lluís Homar stars as the former Mateo Blanco, a screenwriter and ex-director who changed his name to Harry Caine after losing his sight in an automobile accident. A past scandal suddenly resurfaces when the news arrives that the producer of one of Harry's old movies ("Girls and Suitcases"), a corrupt stockbroker named Ernesto Martel (José Luis Gómez), has died. The film subsequently flashes back to the early '90s, when Martel became involved with his secretary, Lena (Cruz), but Mateo also began to develop feelings for her, and auditioned her for "Girls and Suitcases." In response to Mateo's interest in Lena (and her burgeoning interest in him), the jealous Martel commissioned Ray to make a documentary about the making of "Girls and Suitcases" as an excuse to spy on the director and star. Almodóvar uses a tricky structure laden with flashbacks to both comment on and explain the events of the present; he also interweaves a noirish sensibility throughout the picture that marks something of a first for this director. 2hrs 7min/ Spain/ in Spanish/ R

Cinema Lounge Event

It's time for another Cinema Lounge, presented with FLEX, the Florida Film/Video Festival! This time we're bringing you a night of Things to Come (and some things that didn't), featuring H.G. Wells' 1936 classic vision of the future along with a bevy of shorts showing what we used to think would happen yesterday and today. We're also moving the festivities one floor up to the Cinema, with stadium seating and our powerful sound system. The shorts will begin at 8:00pm, with the feature Things to Come starting at 9:00pm. So, join us for a journey into the past's future on March 16th!

The State Farm Youth Advisory Board (YAB) Foundation grant will support the Hippodrome Improvisational Teen Theatre's dynamic service-learning program. HITT participants will plan, create, and implement arts-based prevention performances, workshops, Public Service Announcements and web projects on the critical issue of substance abuse.

The check was presented in a ceremony on the steps of the Hippodrome Theatre Monday, February 22 at 10am with Mary Hausch, Hippodrome Founder and Producing Director and Joy Atkins, State Farm Insurance Foundation Public Affairs Specialist, and Bill Matchell, local State Farm Agent.

Hippodrome Improvisational Teen Theatre (HITT) is a dynamic service-learning project inspiring students in area middle and high schools learn to use theatre techniques to deliver engaging and relevant messages and make positive changes in their lives and in their community.
