SPINNING MY WHEELS

A word, an image, a phrase, a family photograph draws my attention by its beauty, its humor, its absurdity (usually political), and occasionally by its proximity to the sublime. I can't really sleep until I can make art about it. I use acrylic paints for their immediacy and versatility on a variety of surfaces from smooth clayboard to found wood. My paintings are set in odd size boxes, antique or new. I've realized my use of the box is an unconscious metaphor for the boxes of our own making most of us find ourselves caught in.

In recent work, the paintings are combined with text, a word, or a paragraph that may lead the viewer down another path. The remainder of the box I fill with my clay sculpture, found objects, the flotsam and jetsam of pop culture. I also work out of the box. Making art is a vehicle for expressing both a personal interior landscape and a commentary on our society from my viewpoint.
