In a year that has given us such marvelous animated movies as "Ratatouille" and "Paprika," this vibrant, sly and moving personal odyssey takes pride of place." — Newsweek "While so many films about coming of age involve manufactured dilemmas, here is one about a woman who indeed does come of age, and magnificently." — Roger Ebert "Persepolis, the superb film based on Satrapi's graphic memoirs of the same name, is a riveting odyssey in pictures and words. It's unlike any journal you've read or any animated movie you've seen." — Philadelphia Inquirer Persepolis is the poignant story of a young girl in Iran during the
Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of the precocious and
outspoken 9-year-old Marjane that we see a people's hopes dashed as
fundamentalists take power--forcing the veil on women and imprisoning
thousands. Clever and fearless, Marjane outsmarts the "social guardians"
and discovers punk, ABBA, and Iron Maiden. Yet when her uncle is
senselessly executed and as bombs fall around Tehran in the Iran/Iraq
war, the daily fear that permeates life in Iran is palpable. 95 min/

A word, an image, a phrase, a family photograph draws my attention by its beauty, its humor, its absurdity (usually political), and occasionally by its proximity to the sublime. I can't really sleep until I can make art about it. I use acrylic paints for their immediacy and versatility on a variety of surfaces from smooth clayboard to found wood. My paintings are set in odd size boxes, antique or new. I've realized my use of the box is an unconscious metaphor for the boxes of our own making most of us find ourselves caught in.
In recent work, the paintings are combined with text, a word, or a paragraph that may lead the viewer down another path. The remainder of the box I fill with my clay sculpture, found objects, the flotsam and jetsam of pop culture. I also work out of the box. Making art is a vehicle for expressing both a personal interior landscape and a commentary on our society from my viewpoint.
