“My Scientology Movie” at the Hipp Cinema

By ALEXANDRA REGUEIRO

This documentary is about Tom Cruise.

Kidding! He is the first thing that pops into your head when you think of Scientology, though, right? Although Mr. Cruise is a celebrity famous for being member of the scientology belief, this film is not about him.

“My Scientology Movie” follows the curious Louis Theroux and documents his investigation into what really goes on behind the scenes of the infamous Church of Scientology. Cool stuff, we know!

Theroux can teach a master class on eccentric, disagreeable and unexpected human behavior, so it is only natural that when his requests to enter the Church’s headquarters is turned down, Theroux merely takes it as a suggestion. Inspired by the Church’s use of filming techniques, and featuring ex-members of the organization, Theroux uses actors to recreate some situations people claim they experienced as members in an attempt to better understand the way it operates. In a peculiar twist, it becomes clear that the Church is also making a film about our star.

This flick is a great mix of hilarity and moments worthy of a severe eyebrow raise. “My Scientology Movie” is stranger than fiction.
