The Hippodrome
State Theatre proudly presents, the long awaited performance of Terrence
McNally’s 1996 Tony Award Winning Master Class. McNally,
one of America’s greatest playwrights, is best known for writing the books
for the Tony Award-winning musicals, Kiss of the Spider Woman
and Ragtime. He won Tonys for both musicals, as well
as for his play Love! Valour! Compassion!. In addressing
his fascination for his favorite singer, Maria Callas, McNally explores
the triumphs and pitfalls of building an artistic career as the sole focus
of one’s existence. In his own words, “Callas sees and hears what
other singers are deaf and blind to: the poetry of the music…Callas sings
meaning…the intensity of the feelings and the flashes of genius that still
astonish but can never be duplicated.” Master Class
goes beyond portraying the life of Maria Callas. It explores the
heart of a creative passion that connects life to art, and the immense
self-sacrifice that great art so often requires.
by Luigi Cherubini 1797 Three aspiring voice students meet head on with the celebrated Diva, now past her prime, in a 1971 Juilliard School classroom/theater. The results are often hilarious, frequently moving, and ultimately riveting theatre from beginning to end. No knowledge or appreciation of opera? Don't Worry. It's not necessary. Madame Callas is there to infuse you with the beauty, the wonder and the love of an art form of which she was the world's greatest practitioner. Mesmerizing theater.” --New York Times “Howlingly funny and uncommonly perceptive about the irrational entertainment we call opera...Resounds with the ring of truth” --San Francisco Examiner
