Special Events

Along with theatre productions and films, the Hippodrome also hosts music performances, fundraisers, karaoke nights, and other special events.

Many of these events are organized by outside organizations. Learn how to hold a public event at the Hipp by contacting Jessica Sandino at rentals@thehipp.org.

All Things Elections:  Debate Watch Party Series at the Hipp

Join the Hippodrome to watch the presidential debates leading up to our 2016 election party Nov. 8!  We’ll be opening our cinema space up to the public for this can’t-miss series.  All watch parties are free to attend.

Blaze through the presidential campaign trails with a drink in your hand.  We’ll open our bar 30 minutes before the watch parties begin — being sure to serve some Americana-themed Hipp specials.  Grab your friends and a cocktail to enjoy this politically charged event (that’s all in good fun!).

This fall, the Hippodrome Theatre welcomes the Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards for a two-week residency as the culmination of a two-year grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

Void of microphones, lights and sets, international performers from multiple countries are coming to Gainesville together for the first time. The world-traveling actors create a raw theatre experience that never happens the same way twice, and it’s free.

The Workcenter’s collaboration with the Hippodrome is the first of its kind. The troupe has never partnered with a regional, professional theater before. The Workcenter will do six performances throughout the end of October and early November.

Practicing Grotowski’s revolutionary method, the legendary theatre company breaks boundaries between actor and audience, creating an atmosphere that transforms those present into watchers and doers.
The method is unconventional and unlike the standard concept of theatre, where shows run for several weeks and then end. The company performs the same piece for years, systematically exploring the endless options for movement and presentation.

Space is limited, so advance reservations are suggested by calling the Hippodrome Box Office at 352-375-4477.
