By Douglas Carter Beane
September 3-26

Evan Wyler is on top of the world.  He has just published his first novel after nine years of writer’s angst.  It is an instant success and the media have labeled him the “man of the moment.”  His sexy picture on his debut novel’s book jacket has captured the attention of the mysterious Alexa Vere de Vere.   Alexa is an actress, agent and all-around fabulous person—a sexy, smart amalgamation of Sally Bowles, Holly Golightly and Auntie Mame.  She is also a woman with a mission.  She is determined to transform Evan from an earnest struggling artist into a suave and savvy player, exactly the right man to pen the screenplay of her life.

Wyler’s life is transformed.  Charming, sophisticated Alexa offers him a passport to the glamorous world of fame, fortune and the best tables everywhere.  “Writers always have the last word because they have so many,” she tells a gratified Evan.  For a guy who had been planning to look for a day job he is ecstatic to have found his new patroness.  When Wyler falls in love with Alexa, he finds that he is not the only one that has fallen under her spell.   He also finds that success is not all it’s cracked up to be!

Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award and Obie Award, As Bees in Honey Drown took New York by storm, emerging as last season’s big hit.  This uproarious play by Douglas Carter Beane has been described as “clever, stylish and hilarious.”  The show is all of this and more.  It is a sexy satire of a society whose values are primarily based on brand name recognition.  If it’s not Gucci, Versace or Armani, it just is not!  Bees... is also an amusing look at what happens when we are blindsided by fame and fortune and lose sight of our more humanistic instincts—we, too, like bees in honey drown.

Bees... also introduces us to one of the most fascinating characters to hit the stage in years.  Like many of our contemporary sensations, Madonna, for instance, Alexa Vere de Vere is a master of self-invention.  She is Liza Minelli, Audrey Hepburn, Tallulah Bankhead and Rosalind Russell all rolled into one. She overflows with savvy showbiz witticisms.  She believes that most factoids need embellishment.  She believes in living fully and for the moment with extreme fashion and flair.  Is she too rich, too fabulous and too sensational?

Bees... is a must-see show--a surprisingly suspenseful excavation of the world of celebrity and glitz and a “rip-roaring” good time!
